Sanctuary for Elephants

Established in 1975, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a sanctuary for orphaned, injured, and abandoned elephants. Located in the village of Pinnawala, this unique facility offers visitors a chance to witness these magnificent creatures up close in a safe and nurturing environment.

Home to a Large Elephant Herd

Pinnawala is home to one of the largest captive elephant herds in the world. The orphanage currently cares for over 80 elephants, including calves, juveniles, and adults, making it an ideal place to observe the social behavior and interactions of these gentle giants.

Daily Elephant Activities

Visitors to Pinnawala can experience a variety of daily activities, including:

  • Feeding Time: Watch as the elephants are fed with fruits and foliage. Baby elephants are bottle-fed, providing a heartwarming sight.

  • Bathing in the River: One of the highlights is witnessing the elephants being led to the nearby Maha Oya River for their daily bath. This twice-daily event offers a spectacular view of elephants frolicking and cooling off in the water

Conservation and Breeding Program

The orphanage plays a crucial role in the conservation of Sri Lanka's elephant population. It has successfully bred over 20 calves since its inception, contributing to the preservation of this endangered species.

Educational Experience

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is not just a tourist attraction but also an educational center. Visitors can learn about the challenges faced by wild elephants, the importance of conservation efforts, and the care provided to the orphaned and injured elephants at the facility.

Community and Visitor Interaction

The orphanage encourages interaction between visitors and elephants under the supervision of trained staff. You can get close to these gentle giants, take photographs, and even assist in feeding them, creating unforgettable memories.
